Double Rib Cable Stitch

image

This stitch creates a double (meaning four stitch) cable while maintaining a two-by-two rib.

This is an ideal stitch if you want to throw a bit of variety into a rib stitch without making big changes to the layout of the fabric.

Of course, as with every cable, this one also pulls in the fabric and makes it less stretchy, so it will affect your fabric to some extend. Keep that in mind when you’re considering size and gauge.

The double rib cable is knit as follows:

Slip 4 stitches to cable needle, hold to back, knit 2, slip 2 purl stitches back onto left needle, purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches from cable needle

This creates a right twisting cable. You can create a left twisting cable by holding the stitches in front.

You can apply this cable pretty much anywhere in a k2p2 ribbing.

In the swatch pictured above I’ve combined a number of ribbed double cable stitches to create a simple interlinking pattern.

The sample was knit using Opal Solid Sock yarn on 2.25mm Karbonz DPNs. To copy, simply follow the instructions below:

  • Cast on 22 stitches
  • Row 1 – purl 2, knit 2 to end (wrong side)
  • Row 2 to 7 – knit all knit stitches, purl all purl stitches
  • Row 8 – knit 2, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2, double rib cable stitch (see above), purl 2, knit 2, purl 2, knit 2
  • Row 9 to 15 – knit all knit stitches, purl all purl stitches
  • Row 16 – knit 2, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2, double rib cable stitch (see above), knit 2, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2
  • Row 17 to 23 – knit all knit stitches, purl all purl stitches
  • Row 24 – knit 2, purl 2, double rib cable stitch, purl 2, double rib cable stitch, purl 2, knit 2
  • Row 25 to 31 – knit all knit stitches, purl all purl stitches

Many other varieties are possible, so use your imagination and experiment. I came up with this particular swatch for another project I’m working on; more about that to follow later.
